Geriatric Horse Care
The normal effects of aging may
begin to affect your horse around 15 to 20 years of age.
Health care needs then change. Owners want their horse to
spend their remaining years active, comfortable and happy. A
complete yearly physical exam including routine blood work
may expose existing situations such as impaired vision,
arthritis, lameness, metabolic deficiencies, chewing and
digestive difficulties, immune system compromise, heart
anomalies and so forth. Time spent discussing general health
soundness, appropriate feeds, use of supplements, cold
weather considerations, management adaptations and exercise
can greatly improve life quality. With proper care many
horses can stay active and strong well into their 30's.
